Mastery-Based Learning

Beginning in 2009 with the earliest de-tracking of courses; continuing with our K-12 work on assessment for learning; strengthening teacher inquiry focused on assessment practice, shifting to standards-based assessment, grading, and reporting systems; and emphasizing instructional planning through the lens of Universal Design for Learning; we have been on the path to transform the school experience.

Areas of focus include:

  • identifying and presenting clear learning goals (Assessments for Learning)
  • developing multiple methods and opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge and skills (Universal Design for Learning)
  • designing personalized learning pathways (Universal Design for Learning)
  • making shifts that separate measures of knowledge and skill from grades for behavior, compliance, and task completion (Standards-Based Grading)
