Middle School

Welcome to P.K. Yonge Middle School!

Our middle school students are a diverse group of young people who celebrate their differences and demonstrate willingness to stand apart as original thinkers. They consistently achieve excellence in academics and excel in athletics, visual arts, performing arts and band, and are eager participants in a wide range of extracurricular activities.

Middle School Program

P.K. Yonge middle school students spend the school day in a technology-rich, rigorous core program that consists of mathematics, English/language arts, social studies, and inquiry-based science courses at each grade level.

Investigating and Questioning our World through Science and Technology (IQWST) provides daily, hands-on experiences with scientific phenomena, scientific reasoning, modeling, and investigations as part of our integrated, inquiry-based science curriculum.

In math, students are prepared for success in Algebra I by 8th grade. Our inquiry-based mathematics curriculum: Connected Mathematics (CMP) supports the development of deep mathematical understanding by identifying and embedding mathematical ideas in a carefully designed sequence.

Quote

Beginning in middle grades English Language Arts, students focus on young adult and classic literature combined with real world issues. They engage in meaningful dialogue to help develop their own understandings of who they are, where they are in world, and their potential for impact.

In middle school social studies, students explore world cultures, civics, geography, and American history through authentic text and media. They engage in investigations of essential questions about our world and actively participate in classroom discussions to challenge and defend their own understanding of historical events, social constructs, and world cultures.

Both exploratory and specialized elective classes are offered in visual arts, performing arts, technology, engineering, and physical education. Project Lead the Way, a national curriculum in computer science and engineering, provides a unique opportunity for our students to develop systems thinking, as well as creative and collaborative problem solving skills. Spanish 1 is also offered as an elective in 8th grade.

Student Community

ms-soccerMiddle School students at P.K. Yonge live and learn with old friends from elementary school and new friends who join them when the student community more than doubles in 6th grade. School culture is established through diversity where students from all backgrounds and circumstances learn and grow in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

The middle school is characterized by students developing a sense of community as learners and as young people who have the potential to make a significant impact on their local communities and the world around them. P.K. Yonge middle schoolers make friends and explore interests in their own grade levels and across a broader K-12 community of learners in electives, athletics, and after-school activities.

P.K. Yonge middle school students begin to develop confidence in their unique abilities and gifts and love the opportunities that our school provides. They are clever, kind, artistic, athletic, and intelligent young people with incredible potential.
