New to Kindergarten 2022-23 | Assessments

March 30, 2022

New to P.K. Yonge Kindergarten Families — We are so excited to be working with you and your children during the 2022-2023 school year!

To help your children get started, we invite families to sign up for kindergarten assessments on July 20 & 21 | Kindergarten Assessment Signup.

Kindergarten students are assessed at the beginning of the year to establish a baseline for beginning instruction. Students are also reassessed several times throughout the year to monitor progress. This first assessment takes place during the summer and helps us develop class lists that reflect a variety of demographic characteristics and academic achievement levels. Once we have assessed incoming students, class lists are composed and we notify families about their child’s class assignment a week before school begins.

For families who are eager to stay up to date, we keep our Elementary – Getting Started page updated with information about the coming school year. We also share email with families throughout the summer about activities or events related to starting school in the fall.

Kindergarten and first grade students are organized together in our elementary building in a large K-1 learning community led by seven teachers. There are three kindergarten teachers, three first grade teachers, and one learning community leader. The kindergarten and first grade teachers are paired to make three big groupings, which we call the “Lions,” “Tigers,” and “Bears.” Your child will be assigned to one main grade-level teacher and an animal group. This information will be shared with families during the week prior to school starting.

To start the school year, Kindergarteners usually have a staggered start. This means that small groups of students are scheduled on different days of the first week.
Families will be informed which day and time their children will attend prior to school beginning. It’s a big step for students and these smaller groups allow for an easier adjustment to school.

We are looking forward to an exciting year together!

Finally, a reminder to sign up for an assessment day and time (Kindergarten Assessment Sign Up). Assessments are usually held in the K/1 learning community. If there are any changes, families will be notified and information regarding mask wearing and physical distancing will be shared closer to the time.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the K1 Learning Community Leader, Jill Ozog, jozog@pky.ufl.edu.

Sincerely,

The P.K. Yonge K-1 Team
