Elementary – Getting Started
We are so excited to be working with you and your children during the next school year!
As many of you already know, each learning community at P.K. Yonge is lead by seven teachers. There are three teachers and one learning community leader that work with each grade level in a community (K-1, 2-3, 4-5), as well as two year-long teacher interns. Our K-1 community also has a teaching assistant.

All kindergarten students are assessed at the beginning of the year to establish a baseline for beginning instruction. Students are also reassessed several times throughout the year to monitor progress. This first assessment usually takes place during the summer and helps us develop class lists that reflect a variety of demographic characteristics and academic achievement levels. Once we have assessed the incoming students, class lists are composed. You will be notified about your child’s class assignment before school begins.

Join us for the Annual Blue Wave Preview Event! Students and their families are invited to come to the P.K. Yonge Elementary School and visit their learning communities. Students will have the opportunity to spend some time in the learning community and meet their teachers.
The kindergarten and first grade teachers are paired to make three big groupings: “Lions,” “Tigers,” and “Bears.” Students are assigned one main grade-level teacher and an animal group. Kindergarten families will find out this information and details about the Kindergarten Staggered Start right before Blue Wave Preview.

First Day and Kindergarten Staggered Start
First Day of School
Elementary students arrive at the Front Circle each day. To know what to do on the First Day, visit: Elementary First Day Procedures
Kindergarten Staggered Start
Kindergarten will have a staggered start beginning the first two days of school. During this first week of school, half of the students attend on Monday (August 12, 2019), with the other half attending Tuesday (August 13, 2019). All children attend on Wednesday and the remainder of the week. You will be informed which day your child will attend when you receive your child’s class assignment. These smaller groups allow for an easier adjustment to school. It’s a big beginning!!
