P.K. Yonge to Receive $12 Million for a New Gymnasium

July 13, 2023

P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School has been included in the Florida Legislature Budget for $12 million to fund a new gymnasium. The gymnasium will include a state-of-the-art court space, weight training and locker rooms, equipment storage, classrooms, and offices.

“Much like a school’s library or its performing arts center, its gymnasium serves as an essential hub for supporting the development of the ‘whole student.’ A gymnasium for P.K. Yonge represents a vital organ for enhancing the full educational experience of our student body,” said Dr. Brian K. Marchman, P.K. Yonge director and superintendent.

This new phase for campus revitalization will provide academic space for the health and human performance pathway, provide training and competitive space for our student athletes, and bring our Blue Wave community together for spirit and sports events.

“The Hoskins Gymnasium has been central to P.K. Yonge athletics for 65 years. Tremendous athletic achievement has transpired in the current gym. The new gym will provide opportunities to build upon a proud legacy for the next generation of Blue Wave student-athletes,” said Valerie Flournoy, P.K. Yonge athletics director.

Construction design and planning will begin this summer. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2024. School administration will be working closely with planning and construction teams to minimize disruption to students, faculty, and staff as they process moves forward.

P.K. Yonge is grateful for the support of UF, the College of Education, and the Florida Legislature for making this a reality for our school community.
