Update for the Class of 2020

April 23, 2020

Families of P.K. Yonge Seniors — With a final decision from the state that we will finish the school year remotely, we are feeling the loss of the last weeks of school particularly for our senior class and for their families. It’s definitely not the way we anticipated bidding fond farewells and cheering the class of 2020 on into the next phase of their lives.

As we watched and waited to see how the situation would unfold, we gathered ideas and brainstormed ways to honor our seniors and make this as memorable a last month of school as possible. We have some concrete plans and some that are still evolving.

Our toughest news to share is that with the closure of the UF campus, graduation in the Phillips Center for Performing Arts is not possible. We are still working on an alternate way to celebrate graduation. Of course, we are not able to host a large gathering. We are, however, leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to devise a way that we might preserve some of the important aspects of a graduation event while still addressing the very real public health concerns and limitations.

In the meantime, we have some plans that are coming together and ask you to put the dates below on your calendars.

With most activities at UF being moved to a virtual or online setting and UF facilities not available for large events, we do not have a location in which we can hold graduation on the UF campus indoors or out-of-doors. This includes P.K. Yonge. At this point in time, the future availability of UF facilities remains unknown, as does our ability to bring together a large group of people in any location. In an effort to find a guaranteed time and manner to celebrate the senior class, we will be holding graduation virtually and offering other activities as outlined in this update.
