Good morning, Blue Wave.  Today is Monday, October 9th and it is a B Day!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Hispanic Honor Society, Habitat for Humanity, the Global Awareness Club, and Key Club will be collecting items to help the victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Families impacted by the hurricanes and earthquakes are in need of batteries, battery operated cellphone chargers, battery operated fans, toiletry items, infant care items, first aid kits, clothes, shoes, 40-gallon trash bags, and mosquito repellent. Please deliver your donations to the classrooms of Ms. Santiago, Ms. Rodriguez, or Ms. Andrews, or to our table in front of the cafeteria at lunch.

High school students:  

Thespian Club will be hosting the DRACULA’S BALL DANCE, Friday the 13th at 3:00pm in the PAC.  All students grades 9-12 are invited. Admission is $5.00 at the door.

Middle and High School students are invited to participate in the fourth annual Holocaust Reflection Contest sponsored by Nova Southeastern University and the Holocaust Learning and Education Fund, Inc.  Six  students from across the state will be selected, with each receiving an award of $1,000, along with a $500 prize for the student’s teacher mentor and a $500 prize for the school.   Six second-place winners will receive $250.  Categories for entries include essays or poems, visual art pieces, or short films.  Visit nova.edu/holocaustcontest to view last year’s winning entries.  Contest entries will be accepted online between December 1, 2017 and January 21, 2018. Parental approval forms are required to participate.   For more information, see the poster in the front office window.

Signing up for the Blood Drive will begin today and end on Wednesday October 11th.

Anyone who is 16 year old will need a parent permission form to give blood. Everyone giving blood must bring their photo ID this Thursday which is the day of the drive. Students can sign up for a timeslot with Aaron Prendergast or Savannah Banner before, and after school, as well as at lunch.

Last year PKY launched PK Health Smart in collaboration with some UF partners.  We will continue to work this year toward two goals:  Drinking more water and eating healthier snacks.  There will be Health Smart activities sprinkled throughout the year to help us improve in our goal areas.  Be healthy, Blue Wave.

School Counseling:

Juniors and Seniors! Look for an email coming your way regarding the free SAT in November for Alachua County students. If your parent/guardian does not receive this email and you would like to take advantage of the opportunity, please come see Ms. Bryen before October 25th.

Tonight, P.K. Yonge will be holding Financial Aid Night at 6:00 PM in the library. We will be joined by Mrs. Donna Kolb, the Associate Director of the Office for Student Financial Affairs at the University of Florida. She will discuss important information regarding Bright Futures and Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

Attention grade 8 students:

P K Yonge has been invited to participate in Santa Fe College’s Middle School Showcase.  The showcase is designed to enable students to explore the various career and technical programs offered at Santa Fe College. This year students will visit:

1.  Health Sciences
2.  The Teaching Zoo
3.  College Athletics
4.   Digital Media & Graphic Design
5.   Construction & Technical Programs

The Showcase is scheduled for Tuesday, October 17, 2017 from 9:15 a m until 1 p m.  Santa Fe College has limited each middle school to 25 students.  The sign-up sheet and permission forms are located in the main/ attendance office.  Both the permission form and video release must be returned to Mrs. Ireland in the main office by October 13th.  A pizza lunch will be provided to all participating students.  Please contact Mrs. Ireland if you have any questions.

 There will be a boys soccer interest meeting tomorrow starting at 11:55 in Coach Hazan’s portable. All interested soccer players should attend.
