Breaking Ground – Secondary School Facility
October 28, 20192019-20 is the year that construction will begin on a new facility for P.K. Yonge’s secondary school. Years in the making, this innovative facility for students in 6th-12th grades offers new ways to think about and “do” school.
Architecture and environments have always been significant to P.K. Yonge’s influence on education – from leading the university laboratory school mission with professors residing in the school building in 1934, to integrating the outdoors into the learning experience on the “new” campus in 1957, to the construction of a state-of-the-art, flexible learning environment in 2019.
The seven learning communities contained in the new building are anchored by eight science and engineering labs. Each community will house seminar rooms, classrooms, small-group project and meeting rooms, as well as collaborative and independent work stations. In the new P.K. Yonge secondary facility, school will definitely look and feel different – a design intended to respond to meeting the educational needs of students who graduate into an unpredictable, high-tech, innovation-driven world.
Aligned with the school’s mission to design, test, and disseminate innovations in K-12 education through serving a diverse student community, the new facility also promises enhanced opportunities for collaboration with University of Florida researchers and invites greater interest from national and international educators and school leaders.
