Volunteer & Chaperone Screening Policy

At P.K. Yonge, the safety of our students is our highest priority. All adults who volunteer or chaperone must complete the appropriate level of screening before volunteering. The type of screening required depends on the volunteer’s role and level of responsibility for students.

This policy is designed to ensure a safe, respectful, and productive environment for all students. We value partnership with parents and appreciate your support in upholding these requirements.

As a parent or guardian, you will partner with your student’s teacher to begin this process.

Levels of Screening

  • Level 1 Raptor Screening:  Driver license search for sex offender registry
  • Level 2 Screening: fingerprint-based FDLE screening in conjunction with national FBI database, and national sex offender search (Level 2 Supplement in HireRight)
  • Level 2 Supplement without fingerprints: Raptor search, national criminal search and national sex offender search (Level 2 Supplement in HireRight)
  • Level 2 DCF Screening: fingerprint-based screening, national background check, sex offender search (Level 2 Supplement in HireRight), and DCF child welfare included

Key Distinctions

  • Volunteers = Support teachers/staff. Always supervised. (Raptor)
  • Chaperones = Take direct responsibility for students. (Level 2 DCF w/ Raptor) required if supervising children other than your own or on overnight trips)
  • AthleticsVolunteers = may serve (w/ Raptor) if always with a paid coach with a Level 2 DCF. Must have a Level 2 DCF if ever alone with athletes outside line of sight. Never one-on-one — three people minimum rule applies.
  • Athletics-Volunteer Coach = Level 2 DCF w/ Raptor required if supervising children other than your own or on off-campus games/events without the presence of a paid coach.
  • Family Member = Parents, legal guardians, or other designated emergency contacts may supervise their own student without staff present but may not supervise other students without Level 2 DCF clearance. Additional requirements may be in place for off-campus events/field trips, even when supervising own student.

Guiding Principle

Anytime an adult is alone with or directly supervising students who are not their own child, a Level 2 DCF (Raptor & FP) background check is required. Thank you for helping us create a safe and welcoming environment for all Blue Wave students!
