P.K. Yonge student Paola Llorens-Diaz was recently recognized by the President of the Dominican Republic and other national government leaders for her outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to serving Dominican communities around the world.
Paola was selected from a pool of approximately 400 students worldwide, with only 30 students chosen to participate in the prestigious recognition program. The honor celebrates young Dominicans living abroad who demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership, community service, and cultural engagement.
During the weeklong program in the Dominican Republic, Paola visited the National Palace, where she met the President of the Dominican Republic, toured the National Congress, and participated in the unique experience of serving as a “Representative for a Day.” She also explored significant historical and cultural landmarks, deepening her understanding of her Dominican heritage and the country’s history.
The program concluded with a formal recognition ceremony celebrating the students’ achievements and their positive impact on Dominican communities across the globe.
To earn this distinction, Paola completed an extensive selection process that included interviews, service projects, and volunteer work supporting vulnerable communities in the Dominican Republic. Her selection reflected her academic excellence, leadership, dedication to community service, and commitment to making a meaningful difference.
“The trip was an unforgettable experience for me,” Paola said. “I was able to learn more about my roots and where I came from. I also learned about the politics of a country that is completely different from the one I live in. One of my favorite parts was having the opportunity to meet the President of the Dominican Republic. I also had the opportunity to practice my Spanish by speaking with and meeting new people from different parts of the world.”
Paola joined fellow honorees from countries including England, Spain, Chile, Argentina, and Panama, as well as students representing U.S. states and territories such as Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, and Puerto Rico.
Spanish teacher and Hispanic Honor Society sponsor Grisell Santiago said the recognition highlights the importance of celebrating students’ heritage while encouraging them to pursue excellence.
“This was an amazing event in which students of Dominican heritage were recognized for their academic achievements,” Santiago said. “The goal is to inspire students to be proud of their heritage and culture. I am very proud of Paola and all the hard work she puts into everything she does at school, and I am always thankful to her and her family for the support they have provided to our Hispanic Honor Society.”
