Nurturing Open Minds
The 4/5 experience is also designed to open our students’ eyes to the perspective of others. Whether weighing the needs of our learning community or appreciating that each of us learns differently, our emphasis focuses on the variety of viewpoints that make up our world. We build our students’ maturing skills, awareness, and confidence while protecting their optimism and wonder. Students in the 4/5 community are known and loved for the ideas they contribute and feel safe to explore the reaches of their contributions.
Building a Strong Foundation for Middle School Success
While many schools don’t begin helping students with a seamless transition to middle school, the fourth- and fifth-grade learning community uses a departmentalization model which provides our students with the tools needed to successfully begin transitioning to the middle school setting. This increases independence which will set students up for success when they make the transition to middle school. The fourth- and fifth-grade experience is all about balancing the need for hands-on guidance, while also getting children excited about taking ownership of their own learning.
