Phase 3: Gymnasium
In 2023, P.K. Yonge received legislative funding to build the next phase of the campus revitalization project—the gymnasium. The state-of-the-art gymnasium will be built in the southwest corner of campus. It will bring training facilities, classrooms, weight rooms, offices, and a gym to support the PK health and human performance pathway, physical education department, and student athletes on campus.

Opening in 2021, our three-story secondary building houses students from 6th–12th grade in learning communities characterized by flexible learning spaces. The design aims to promote collaboration with furniture that’s comfortable and easy to rearrange, community building through high visibility and shared spaces in a physical environment, and seamless movement between technology-supported learning and face-to-face interaction for both students and teachers.
The facility is designed to be energy efficient. Gone are the hallways of traditional school buildings. The square footage typically allocated to hallways is incorporated into the learning spaces to optimize indoor space for learning rather than traffic-flow. The building concept speaks to the future by centralizing science labs in the architectural design and by setting the stage to bring the concepts of collaboration and flexibility to life.
Another step in P.K. Yonge’s total campus revitalization is the reorientation of the main school entrance from SW 11th Street to SW 6th Street. The new main entrance, located at 1200 SW 6th Street, promises significant improvement to traffic flow and school safety.
Phase 1: Elementary Building, 2012
In 2012, the elementary school at P.K. Yonge was transformed from a 1950s classroom model to a flexible, future-oriented learning experience. Not only do students love the elementary building, but educators from around the world are coming to P.K. Yonge to learn how teaching and learning can be transformed inside a modern, flexible learning environment.
