FIRST Robotics

What is FIRST?

Inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989. FIRST is about inspiring innovation, igniting curiosity, and creating pathways for students in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. Each January, teams from around the world are tasked with a challenge during a Season Kickoff Event. During the build season (following kickoff), teams work through the design process with the ultimate goal of building a successful competition robot. In the months of March and April, teams compete at district, regional, and world competitions.

Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology, we call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”

Under strict rules, limited time, and resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.

Team Outreach

Assistive Technology: #FIRSTwithAT

Assistive Technology (AT) is any solution that improves the quality of life and increases accessibility for individuals with disabilities. #FIRSTwithAT is an initiative started in 2019 by Roaring Riptide (RR) that aims to get other robotics teams involved in making low-cost AT solutions for members of their communities. Riptide works to donate custom AT devices and open-source designs to the Gainesville, FL area and beyond.
