FIRST Technical Challenge – Beach Boys – Team 18205
FTC Team #18205 Beach Boys was founded in 2019 through a FIRST rookie grant, but the team wasn’t fully established and funded until the summer of 2020. The team is coached by Leigh Anne Brewster, a middle and high school instructor at PK Yonge. In response to the uncertainty of the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) season due to COVID-19, Roaring Riptide saw an opportunity to use our resources and lengthier off-season to expand our school’s STEM programs through founding 2 new FTC teams: Team #18205 Beach Boys and Team #18317 Mechanical Mermaids.
Currently, we have 9 members (two 9th graders, five 10th graders, and one 12th grader) from PK Yonge, a K-12 research school under the University of Florida’s College of Education. We have a space both in our school and a space donated to us at UF innovate, which is the University’s start-up tech incubator.
We have 7 mentors on our team, of which 4 are affiliated with the University of Florida (UF). All external mentors (non-faculty of our school) will be virtual for the 2020-2021 season due to our school’s Reopening Plan Guidelines. One of our virtual mentors, Cassie, works for the Department of Defense as a software engineer. We are also fortunate to have a college professor mentor our team; Dr. Crane. Dr. Crane currently is a professor and Woodie Flowers Finalist Award recipient, who teaches computer-aided design and robotics at UF. In addition to these two mentors, Gary Dillard is a mechanical engineer working at Pratt & Whitney. As of the 2020 season, all of our mentors have had extensive FIRST experience. Either through mentoring FIRST teams, assisting or directing FIRST events, or having been part of FIRST teams in the past.
Our team is excited to help establish this FTC team at PK Yonge. Through the creation of our team and Team #18317 Mechanical Mermaids, our school will offer all levels of FIRST. We view our team’s creation as a milestone since the foundation of our FRC Team Roaring Riptide in 2011 which marks our school’s original FIRST program. We hope to continue our expansion of STEM throughout our community well into the future.
