Macy Geiger is the Middle School Learning Community Leader at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School at the University of Florida, where she has taught since 2009. Prior to 2018-19, she taught a variety of subjects in the 4th and 5th grade learning community. Macy began her career teaching first grade in Texas, and has taught in Maryland and Virginia, as well. She holds a bachelor’s degree in French from Agnes Scott College and a master’s degree in Education from the University of Florida.
Children come to school with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, and each of them have an important story to tell. It is important for teachers to listen, and to learn from them, too! Hence, Macy strives build and support a “community of learners” who naturally share, learn, grow, and reflect with each other. This community begins within the school, but extends far beyond. Macy believes that educators need to help children develop their minds in a context of caring for others, personal responsibility, empathy, and humane values. Therefore, it is not just Macy’s mission to teach academics, but to also facilitate students’ progress as individuals who are part of a collective community.
