Karla has served as a classroom teacher, school principal, non-profit founder and director, social entrepreneur, and organizational development consultant. She is also a poet and audio artist who is learning how to podcast! She has integrated creative writing, transformative media studies, participatory action research, and critical pedagogy as well as experiential and travel education in her teaching.

She recently moved from a renovated trailer on 10 acres in East Hardwick, Vermont to a one-room house by a small lake, tucked away under the live oaks, palms, and crazy-beautiful flowering bushes of Hawthorne, Florida. She has two beautiful and intelligent children and four exceptionally lovely grandchildren; she lives with a couple of stunning betta fish and two adorable German Shepherds.

The world you see is just a movie in your mind.
Rocks don’t see it.
Bless and sit down.
Forgive and forget.
Practice kindness all day to everybody
and you will realize you’re already
in heaven now.
That’s the story.
That’s the message.
Nobody understands it,
nobody listens, they’re
all running around like chickens with heads cut
off. I will try to teach it but it will
be in vain, s’why I’ll
end up in a shack
praying and being
cool and singing
by my woodstove
making pancakes.
