Dear Blue Wave Families,
As if one major project weren’t exciting enough 😊, I wanted to share an important update that will be happening alongside construction of our new, state-of-the-art, air-conditioned gymnasium.
The City of Gainesville will soon begin a significant resurfacing and safety improvement project on SW 6th Street, directly adjacent to our campus. While the timing may feel a bit overwhelming, this project ultimately brings meaningful long-term benefits for safety, accessibility, and traffic flow around P.K. Yonge.
What to Expect from the City’s Project
- Project start: Wednesday, February 11, 2026
- Estimated completion: Fall 2026
- Scope: Resurfacing SW 6th Street from Depot Avenue to SW 16th Avenue
- A new pedestrian crossing at the P.K. Yonge driveway, including Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs)
- Dedicated turn lanes (northbound left and southbound right) into P.K. Yonge
- Sidewalk repairs
- ADA-compliant curb ramp modifications
- Lane repurposing, resulting in two travel lanes (one in each direction), with the addition of on-street parking and bike lanes
Traffic During Construction
- Traffic lanes will be periodically shifted, but two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the project.
- Turn lanes into the school will remain open during peak drop-off and pick-up times.
