Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency to Begin SW 13th St. Overpass & Rail-Trail Projects

The Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) will be performing planned construction activities to the SW 13th St. pedestrian overpass and Depot Avenue rail-trail starting in March 2012 and ending in November 2012.

The overpass is a former railroad bridge currently in use as part of the local rails-to-trails system. The CRA will retrofit the overpass with transportation and safety enhancements. The changes will connect SW 13th St. to the rail-trail, which is a heavily trafficked corridor linking the University of Florida and Shands to the greater city. The portion of the rail-trail connecting to the east of the overpass will also be reconstructed.

The overpass and rail-trail between SW 11th St. and Archer Rd. will be closed to all traffic during construction. Access across SW 13th St. will be accommodated at SW 9th Ave. (Detail of Construction). Vehicular and pedestrian access along SW 13th St. will remain open but lanes may be altered at various times.

Building Our New School!

You might have noticed the new building rising up out of the ground right before our eyes (see slideshows and video below).  Excitement is in the air as we anticipate school days in our brand new 21st century elementary school.

Scheduled to open for the first day of the 2012-2013 school year, our teachers and students are getting themselves ready for this new adventure.  We expect the building to be completed by April, which will provide plenty of time for our teachers and their belongings to make the big move.  In the meantime we are challenged with fewer parking spaces and less field space for this one school year.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we have had to make room for our 4th and 5th grade learning communities in the new portables. The good news is that these portables will be removed over the summer and fields and additional parking will be restored.

Elementary parents, please plan on joining us on Tuesday, September 13th at 5:30 in the Performing Arts Center for our Elementary Open House as we talk about 21st century approaches to teaching and learning and how we are putting many of these ideas and concepts into place this year, in our 1950’s architecture.

Groundbreaking for our new Elementary School began in February 2011 and we are excited to see developments as they materialize in front of us.

Please check back to this page for news and updates regarding construction of the new school. We will be posting videos and photos as building are demolised and constructed.
