Today is Wednesday, October 17th and it is an A Day.

Congratulations and thank you to all students who submitted applications for the Rosa Rabell scholarship. All applications were of a high standard, and we are so pleased to have had many excellent applicants.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2019 Rosa Rabell Scholarship:

These four students will be participating in an immersion program in Costa Rica for 2 weeks in June of 2019. They will be learning and exploring the beautiful culture of Costa Rica and will be immersed in the Spanish Language. Ga’leisha, Kevin, Cierra, and William, please see Mrs. Santiago right after school to today (Wednesday, October 17) for an informational meeting about Costa Rica and to choose dates for meeting with parents.

The high school National Honor Society is collecting items to take to Hurricane Michael Victims this weekend.  The following is a list of items that are needed. Donations can be delivered to Dr. Weller’s classroom (M-350) until 1:00 pm on Friday.  They will be delivered to Second Harvest of the Big Bend in the Panhandle on Saturday.

Beans, Rice, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Instant Potatoes, whole grain cereals, oatmeal, grits, granola bars, macaroni & cheese, tuna helper, chicken helper, canned tuna, canned chicken, canned fruits, peanut butter, jelly, 100% juice… AND non-food items such as deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and diapers.

Attention Seniors:

  • A few important messages from School Counseling: First, the October Scholarship Newsletter is available on the School Counseling page of the P.K. Yonge website.
  • Second, the Edna M Hart Keeper of the Dream Scholarship is right around the corner. This scholarship is awarded to one Alachua County student every year and recognizes students who demonstrate strong community service, academics, and a commitment to the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. If you are interested, see Ms. Bryen for an application. The application is due November 1.
  • Finally, the North Central Florida College Fair will be on October 20, 2018 from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM at the Martin Luther King Multipurpose Center in Gainesville. Students are asked to bring copies of their transcripts, best test scores, resumes and an essay writing sample.

 

The Tri-M music honor society meeting is TOMORROW during high school lunch in Dr. Harris’ room A-104 in the PAC.

PKY Carnival is TOMORROW from 3pm to 6pm on the North Field.  Get your discounted tickets from the ticket sales table on the top circle before and after school through Thursday morning, or buy regular price tickets at Carnival on Thursday.  Join in the fun of games & bounce houses, enter to win a Chance Drawing Basket, bid on Silent Auction items, and support our school PTO, clubs, and music ensembles. High School students wishing to earn volunteer hours should used the Signup Genius link on the PTO Facebook page by Wednesday.  See you at Carnival on Thursday!

I would like to thank you all for your excitement during the first week of customization bar. We hope you are enjoying it.

  1. The lunch line will be open again today for after school snacks.
  2.  As of TODAY we will only have ONE line outside at the café during LUNCH.

Tomorrow, College Week Live will be hosting a virtual college fair from 10:00 AM-10:00 PM. At this event, students can live chat with admissions and financial aid counselors at 80+ colleges and universities, including in-state and out of state institutions. This event will also include information on: SAT tricks and tips, writing a great essay, and finding money for scholarships. The event can be found at collegeweeklive.com.

The middle school Science Olympiad Thursday meeting is cancelled.

National Art Honor Society meets Thursdays during High School lunch in Mr. Moody’s room.

Girls varsity soccer tryouts will be held on Monday, October 22nd and Tuesday, October 23rd from 2:45-4:30 pm on the top field. Please have all of your physical and parent consent paperwork into Coach Barrett before Monday’s tryout.

Congratulations to the golf team for winning their 4th district championship in a row with a score of 296. Jake Davis was the overall winner shooting an even par 70.  On the girls’ side, Katelyn Huber was the overall winner shooting a 73. Good luck at regionals next Monday.

There is a mandatory interest meeting for all students currently not playing football that desire to play Freshman, JV or varsity basketball in the community classroom on Thursday, October 18th at 2:45pm.

Boys soccer try-outs will be on the top field on Monday, October 22nd & Tuesday, October 23rdfrom 2:40-4:40pm.

Middle School soccer try-outs for boys and girls will be held on the bottom field from 2:15-4pm on Monday, Oct. 22nd, Tuesday, Oct. 23rd and Thursday, Oct. 25th.

If you have not yet ordered your 2018-19 yearbook, reserve a copy today at the early bird rate of $70 and guarantee yourself a copy. Prices will increase after December 31 to $80.

Senior yearbook ads are also available for purchase. A senior ad is a dedicated section of the yearbook specifically for a specific senior. Parents may purchase an ad online, and we strongly recommend that the ads be ordered sooner rather than later so we can start them ASAP. Once your ad has been purchased, Mr. Mathien will email a form to gather ad information from parents. Ads will be available for purchase until January 31st.
