You could say P.K.Yonge is a family affair with the Prestons. My husband’s mother and her 3 siblings graduated from PKY as did he and his 6 siblings. Both my daughters were “lifers” here at P.K. Yonge.
I began working here part-time in 1986 as a teacher’s aide in a 3rd grade classroom. After a couple of years there, I moved to aideing in 1st grade.
Years later, while still aideing in the elementary school, I began working with the After School Program. Later, I was hired to be secretary for the Elementary Principal.
In 1996, I became a full-time employee while still the principal’s secretary. Shortly after Dr. Vandiver’s arrival and due to her restructuring of the Administration, I became the Attendance Secretary. Beginning my 30th year, I’ve now been here longer than any of the other Prestons and I still haven’t graduated !
As you can imagine, I’ve seen many changes. None were more stark than the addition of the new innovative 2-story Elementary building and the groundbreaking teaching methods of our elementary faculty. Imagine the whole Elementary school housed in one building! Undoubtedly, more changes are afoot for P.K.Yonge as an equally innovative Secondary school building is coming next, it’s hoped, in the “not too distant” future.
Imagine my surprise when, after 17 years as Attendance Secretary, I was moved to the new position of Data Secretary! I still miss the parents and students with whom I developed relationships over the years. The more I learn in my current position the more I am certain I have much more to learn.
My hope and prayer is that all PKY families will have a positively wonderful new school year.
