Welcome to P.K. Yonge Elementary School!
Our 348 elementary school students represent the diversity of the state and are selected by lottery. They are creative and eager to learn, and express themselves through enthusiastic participation in academics, the arts, physical education, and extracurricular activities.
Elementary students at P.K. Yonge spend their school day in learning communities (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) embedded in a state-of-the-art elementary school building, designed and constructed with students of tomorrow’s world in mind. P.K. Yonge teachers are committed to knowing each child from all angles, partnering with families, and inviting them in as integral parts of their child’s educational experience.

Elementary School Program
P.K. Yonge’s elementary academic program is technology-rich and consists of mathematics, reading and writing, social studies, and inquiry-based science.
Elementary literacy is addressed through the development of foundational skills in reading (phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency, etc.) vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. The curriculum, designed by the Center for the Collaborative Classroom, addresses literacy coupled with a strong social emotional framework that not only increases student capacity for learning, but helps students become contributors to their own learning experience.
Elementary students develop deep mathematical understanding through Investigations elementary math curriculum. Conceptual understanding of math is promoted over procedural understanding, with instruction focusing on mathematical thinking and reasoning.
The project-based nature of social studies in P.K. Yonge’s elementary school allows students to engage in research and produce artifacts to illustrate their learning. The elementary social studies program is tightly connected to literacy and embedded in the standards. Many social studies units culminate in experiential components that invite families and communities members in to be part of a real world application of classroom learning:
Elementary Student Community
As elementary students master foundational skills in reading, writing, science, and mathematics, they are challenged through integrated, project-based learning units to be creative, innovative, self-directed learners who work with others to accomplish goals and solve challenging problems. P.K. Yonge elementary students are characterized by their ability to know themselves as learners, with reflections on their own learning promoted from the very start of their school experience. The elementary experience at P.K. Yonge helps students find their voices
and determine what they believe about the world, promoting a sense of agency, autonomy, connectedness, and belonging. In their learning communities, students feel connected to a variety of teachers and students across age levels and learn how to be friends, leaders, thinkers, and community members focused on the public good. P.K. Yonge elementary students are beginning their journey in a “whole child” educational model that prepares them to embrace diversity, question assumptions, and explore their world.
